December 18, 2011 - I was an Integrated Arts student at PCVS from 2002-2006. I’ve always been proud of the school, and it sucks to know they’re facing a potential closure yet again (the school has been put on the chopping block time and again for over 30 years).
December 17, 2011 - SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act, goes beyond anti-piracy; It’s corporate censorship. It’s a case of guilty until proven innocent – the only way for sites to avoid being shut down is for them to fight back through legal means, an expensive and time-consuming process. Why should Canadians care? A Canadian version of SOPA would come next. It’ll be used to “strengthen our relationship” with American politicians, and there’d be little resistance to pass it.
December 16, 2011 - I have an issue with trying to do too much. The problem is that I say yes to too many things. So, what am I doing to make an improvement? Projects are being scraped off my plate. Instead of abandoning projects, I’m transitioning them to others. Instead of rejecting new projects, I’m introducing clients to developers.
December 15, 2011 - I understand the decision to pull out of the Kyoto Protocol. The strength of our economy depends largely on industries that are the worst offenders for pollution. But Environment Minister Peter Kent’s comment to MP Megan Leslie was a slap in the face. The crap pulled by Kent would have been overlooked if it wasn’t for Trudeau’s outburst.
December 14, 2011 - More often than not, Reddit can churn out some really useful knowledge. I was particularly impressed with a thread on the AskReddit forum entitled “What are some things I should know as my parents get older?”. Here’s a summary of the top contributions (warning, some NSFW language).
December 13, 2011 - The Toronto WordPress Meetup Group is wrapping up 2011 with a social gathering at Pauper’s Pub, just down the street from Bloor & Bathurst. We weren’t sure what the turnout would be, so we didn’t book the upstairs room – instead, we’re gathering at the back of the main floor.
December 4, 2011 - Connected is a simple CRM tool that’s absolutely free to use. It does everything a good CRM should — track conversations, centralize contact information, set reminders and schedules for follow-ups — and it gets even better by integrating with major social networks.
December 2, 2011 - It doesn’t take a genius to realize that Rob Ford should not be Toronto’s mayor. The guy ran on a platform of too-good-to-be-true promises, essentially promising to cut revenues without cutting costs, citing some magical gravy money as the source for ongoing expenses. Turns out there wasn’t much gravy after all. Edward Keenan explores the issue in his op ed from this week’s edition of The Grid TO.
December 1, 2011 - “Would you rather be surrounded by Nickelback and Fergie? If you’re going to be surrounded by music randomly, I’d rather it be our music.” Licensing music to advertisers is a completely legitimate way for bands to reach new audiences.
November 30, 2011 - I like to start things. Many things. I get new ideas, my excitement level reaches a fevered pitch, and I obsess over the project for weeks. But then I lose focus, or something new comes along, and I get distracted. At the time of writing this post (November 30, 2011), I have five projects in the works. With all these obligations, there isn’t enough time in the evenings and weekends to do anything properly. So, effective immediately, I’m not taking on any new website projects.
