Importance of Research in Social Media

Wildfire Strategic Marketing | (3i) » Understanding the true value of research and stats in social media

Recently a lot of research has come out that shows who and how people are using specific social networks, which is a great thing for any MarCom person. Reports have shown the average age of users of key networks such as Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn, as well as where people are sharing information online. Not only is this information valuable on a pure: finally, some actual hard stats on the latest online usage, perspective. They also reinforce a key point in traditional marketing: Demographics and Psycographics are more than just “old” marketing buzz words.

I’ve become increasingly focused on getting solid numbers for pretty much everything at work. I’m still learning how to break down the numbers and apply them efficiently (we looked at communications moreso than marketing figures in school), but it’s nonetheless an exciting and interesting process.

Establishing the ROI for social media is especially important. Blogging/microblogging takes a lot of commitment, which means time spent and (ultimately) money spent. Proving that this is wisely invested time/money should be a key part of your plan, not an afterthought.

Anti-Sec Movement and Imageshack

ImageShack Hacked by Anti-sec Movement (From Mashable)

ImageShack (ImageShack), one of the web’s largest image hosts, was attacked tonight by a movement called “Anti-Sec”. The result of the attack has been to replace all ImageShack hosted images with a manifesto for the movement…

We first got word of this over at GTAForums.com when we noticed forum signatures being replaced with the obnoxiously large images.

After some quick research, it seems that the movement has picked up from where it left off three years ago…

Stanley Cup in Eastern Ontario this Summer

Cooke bringing Cup home – Belleville Intelligencer – Ontario, CA

Stirling native Matt Cooke, who helped the Pittsburgh Penguins capture hockey’s most precious prize in a tough, seven-game battle against the Detroit Red Wings that ended June 12, has told The Intelligencer he plans to bring the cup home and allow local fans a chance to celebrate with him and his family later this summer.

Each player from a Stanley Cup winning team is allowed to bring the trophy to their home region for one day. Cooke said a date has not yet been determined.

Details are vague, but if you’re a hockey fan, this could be a great opportunity to check out the Stanley Cup in person.

The Showroom that is OpensourceCMS

opensourceCMS.com was created to give you the opportunity to “try out” some of the best free and open source software systems in the world. Each system listed here provides for a user demo so you can make an informed decision regarding which system best suits your needs without having to go through the tedious process of installing multiple systems only to find they don’t do what you require.

I’ve been using opensourceCMS for years. It’s done a wonderful job of expanding my knowledge of what content management systems are out there. One of my favourite recent finds is LightNEasy, a barebones flatfile CMS built on PHP. I plan on putting together a few projects with it this weekend – we’ll see how it goes!
